Census: Illinois loses title of 5th largest state to Pennsylvania

The U.S. population grew by 2.3 million between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, representing a 0.72 percent increase to 325.7 million.

Census estimates released earlier this month showed a record number of people moving out of Colorado, with 193,000 leaving for other states in 2016. IL lost more than 33,000 residents, dropping to the sixth most populous state in the union with 12,802,023 residents. Idaho's growth rate of 2.2 percent led the nation, followed by Nevada, Utah and Washington State. It increased its population by 2.2 percent, which took just under 37,000 new residents to accomplish.

Pennsylvania was the fifth-most populous state in the 1990 census, but was passed by IL in the 2000 census.

The population figures are closely watched as a sign of what will happen when congressional maps are redrawn after the 2020 Census.

Idaho is the country's fastest-growing state, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Wednesday.

Although the mining industry, including oil and gas extraction, in Wyoming added over 1,000 jobs from mid-2016 to mid-2017, almost all other sectors of the state's economy still saw job losses, led by construction and government. In 2017, 38.0 percent of the nation's population lived in the South and 23.8 percent lived in the West.

But Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, called for a change of tack by the government in the second round of talks with the EU. But Britain would align its rules and regulations with Brussels, hoping this would allow a greater degree of market access.

Eight states lost population between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017.

IL and West Virginia saw the largest drop in populations by number. Vermont - the least populated state with 623,354 residents, gained 303.

ME grew 4 percent, Rhode Island by 2 percent, and CT and Vermont basically broke even. That brought the 2017 population estimate for IL to 12,802,023 people.
