Horror-inspired Riverdale spinoff, Sabrina, is coming to Netflix

The new series will be based on the Archie comic The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and will function as a dark origin story for the iconic teenage witch. The original plan was to have Sabrina show up during an episode of Riverdale before spinning-off into her own series. Netflix's interest in Sabrina is not surprising.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, chief creative officer of Archie Comics, will serve as writer and executive producer. Perhaps streaming results from Riverdale appearing on Netflix enticed the streaming giant to make a move in acquiring Sabrina for themselves. Both "Riverdale" and "Sabrina" are based on Archie Comics properties, and there presumably would have been opportunities for characters to cross over between the two shows had it landed at the network.

News of a Sabrina reboot first surfaced back in September, and the details were spellbinding, to say the least. Inspired by the comic book series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the show will reimagine the the story of Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a darker, more horror-oriented storyline. It aired on ABC for its first four, then moved to The WB (now The CW) for its final three.Season 1 of "Riverdale" is currently available on Netflix, which is credited with boosting the show's ratings in Season 2. As we've seen, Netflix is also willing to spend plenty of money on shows - which could mean a noticeable bump up in quality for the show. Television already had a list of actresses in consideration for the role, and now that list is being revisited with the commitment from Netflix. The release date has yet to be announced, but according to THR's sources, the two seasons of the Riverdale spinoff will reportedly "shoot back-to-back with the first batch filming from February to June and second from June to October".
