Officials investigate Brooklyn blaze that killed mother, 3 children

A woman and three children were killed in an early Monday morning house fire in Brooklyn, fire and police officials said.

The fire broke out just before 2:30 a.m. on East 14th Street in Sheepshead Bay.

The 40-year-old mother, Aliza Azam, and her two sons, aged 11 and 7, and a daughter, 3, did not escape.

The father and two teenagers were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Seven firefighters were also injured during the incident, the Post adds.

Al-Shabab has been blamed for the massive truck bombing in the capital in October that left 512 dead. Shabaab carries out frequent bombings in Mogadishu and other towns.

"The fire traveled very quickly", Nigro said, "The fire went from the first-floor front, up the stairs the second, again up the stairs to the attic".

This is a developing story.

Nigro said the children's father saved two of his older children from the fire and was seriously burned trying to get back inside the burning house.

"So often, tragedy strikes at this time of year, and the holidays make it that much more hard because our communities should be celebrating, not mourning", fire department Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. "The units, knowing there were people in the home, pushed in very aggressively".

"Tragedy strikes at this time of year, and as I say before, this time of year makes it that much sadder", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

A longtime family friend and neighbor, Morris Levy, said the family had recently moved into the house.

The father was the manager of a Coney Island clothing store called "Hat Box", according to one of his friends, 59-year-old Avi Navon. He said the mother and children will be flown to Israel for burial.

Commissioner Nigro said the fire appears to be accidental. The Azan family are members of the Syrian Jewish community in Brooklyn. Over the last couple days, several other major fires have caused many injuries - some very serious - and displaced others from their homes. The goal of the mayor's remarks was to place responsibility for safety entirely on the residents by urging them to be careful about "decorations, electric lights, candles, space heaters and other items".
