Schnatter sparked controversy in November when he slammed NFL leadership over players' kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality. "Leadership starts at the top and this is an example of poor leadership", Schnatter said, noting he thought the issue had been "nipped in the bud" a year and a half ago. "We are disappointed the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this", referring to the USA national anthem protests.

Papa John's, which lays claim to being the nation's third-largest pizza chain, could not be reached immediately for comment. "He has excelled at every job he's ever held at Papa John's - from being an hourly customer service rep, to a delivery driver, store general manager, director of operations, franchisee and most recently President".
