Trump tries to block Mitt Romney from becoming Utah senator

President Donald Trump said on Monday he wants U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah to run for re-election, a move that puts Trump on a collision course with Republican rival Mitt Romney, who wants to run for Hatch's seat. The Republicans who discussed the matter with Romney recently said they are convinced Trump wants to keep the former MA governor out of the race.

Trump has been urging Hatch to run long before Romney entered the conversation, according to the senator's office. Orrin Hatch retires. Trump has encouraged Hatch, 83, to seek another term. However, he's also criticized Trump enough to get under his skin; Romney called on Trump to stay in the Paris climate agreement, blasted his response to the violence in Charlottesville, and undermined Trump's response to the Roy Moore scandal. He has been outspoken in his support of President Donald Trump, recently calling him one of the best presidents he ever served under.

Mitt Romney's allies lashed out at former White House strategist Steve Bannon on Wednesday, a day after he said at an Alabama rally that Romney and his family "hid behind" their Mormon religion to avoid military service.

"[Trump] has got a great relationship with Governor Romney", Conway said of the former MA governor. Romney received a draft deferment for missionary work in France during Vietnam.

Romney and Flake drew attention to divisions within the GOP, but attacking them is by no means necessary to the cause of electing Moore.

She did say, however, that Trump did not send Bannon down to Alabama for Tuesday night's rally.

He added that Mr. Romney's five sons also avoided service - though, unlike their father, they did not come of age when the USA had a military draft.

"No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity", he added. "We have 7,000 dead and 52,000 casualties, and where were the Romneys during those wars?" he continued. "Judge Moore has more integrity in his pinky finger". Neither of Trump's adult sons served in the military. "Whether you agree or disagree with him on any matter of public policy, you can't credibly call into question his patriotism or moral character - especially on the basis of his religious beliefs or his outstanding service as a missionary".
