United Kingdom minister: Damian Green was sacked because he lied

Mr Green reacted to Mr Quick's claims, in a Sunday Times article, by saying he had not been told that "improper material" had been found on his Parliamentary computer.

He wrote: "I accept that I should have been clear in my press statements that police lawyers talked to my lawyers in 2008 about the pornography on the computers, and that the police raised it with me in a subsequent phone call in 2013".

But Mr Hunt suggested Mr Green had been "pushed into a situation" where he said something he "didn't mean to say".

"I apologise that my statements were misleading on this point".

Hunt, who is reportedly being considered as a potential successor to Green, said the prime minister had asked Green to resign "very sadly, and I know with a very heavy heart".

Conservative MPs are angry about the alleged actions of the two retired detectives, with Jeremy Hunt claiming they "did not sit comfortably in a democracy", something, he added, Theresa May "had made clear" in her letter to Mr Green.

Mr Green, who campaigned for Remain in last year's European Union referendum and had been a leading voice in Cabinet for a "softer" Brexit, has been a friend of the prime minister's since their Oxford University days.

Sources close to Mr Davis said he had warned Downing Street against sacking Mr Green but in the aftermath of his forced resignation, sources close to the Brexit Secretary said he would not be resigning in protest.

He added he "depply regretted" the "distress" caused to Ms Maltby and acknowledged that he "clearly made her feel uncomfrotable - and for this I apologise".

Her first secretary of state, a man who the BBC reports is essentially her deputy and who theGuardian notes was brought "into Downing Street after her majority was wiped out in June's general election to help shore up her authority", is out after it emerged he lied about porn found on his work computer almost a decade ago.

Mr Hunt continued: "He lied on a particular incident, yes, I think lots of people who understand the context would appreciate why that might have happened but that doesn't make it any Cabinet ministers to the very highest standards of conduct, rightly, but I think we should remember that those are standards that would probably not apply in many other countries".

Ms Maltby's parents, Colin and Victoria Maltby, said they were "pleased" the Cabinet Office inquiry had concluded.
