Apple acquires Canada-based app development service buddybuild

To make it easier for developers to create and modify their apps for iOS, the company acquired Buddybuild.

Apple redesigned the App Store over the past year and has made other changes, including adding search advertising, improving developer tools and introducing new ways for third-party apps to make money. Apple says, "The team (currently employing around 40 or so engineers) will stay put in BC, a fact that the startup celebrated by noting that it's always been proud to be a Canadian company".

The company provides fast shipping of apps for the developers via integrations with developer tools for iOS apps like BitBucket, GitLab, and GitHub. It will also discontinue all its services to Android app developers. The service will shut down in coming March. This is the second big acquisition by Apple in less than a month, after it acquired the music discovery app Shazam last month. On paper, at least, Buddybuild would add to what TestFlight now offers with a deeper range of developer options and support for app developers covering Apple's range of mobile operating systems. It allows IOS app developers to run a UI & beta test and simultaneously offers a secure environment to build a proficient app.

Apps are a key battleground for smartphone makers: they lure users to buy their devices, and when the pace of smartphone acquisition slows down as markets mature, apps increasingly become a revenue stream in their own right.
