But two other films widely seen as strong Oscar contenders - Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age dramedy "Lady Bird", which notched a best picture victory at the Globes in the comedy or musical category, and Steven Spielberg's Pentagon Papers drama "The Post - failed to make BAFTA's cut".

Perhaps less of a surprise, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", received a grand total of nine nominations.

"It's a really broad mix of established and emerging talent", said BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after the nominations announcement.

In terms of rising British stars, Berry pointed to Get Out's Daniel Kaluuya, who was named a BAFTA "Brit to Watch" in 2011 and is now nominated in both the best actor and rising star categories.

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is a film about a mother, frustrated with a police investigation into her daughter's death, who goes to great length to push authorities to catch the killer. Joanna Lumley takes over from veteran presenter Stephen Fry.
