US Vice President Mike Pence will visit Israel as part of a Middle East tour initially planned for last month after President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The visit will include Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, but not Palestine.

"At President Trump's direction, the vice president is traveling to the Middle East to reaffirm our commitment to work with the U.S.'s allies in the region to defeat radicalism that threatens future generations", Pence spokesperson Alyssa Farah said in a statement.

Observers say Pence's visit may provoke further clashes and unrest in the region.

Vice President Mike Pence's office has announced new dates for his delayed trip to the Middle East: Jan. 19-23.

The status of Jerusalem, which is home to Muslim, Jewish and Christian holy sites, is one of the thorniest obstacles to a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, who were furious over Trump's move and have declined to meet with Pence.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has previously announced that he refuses to meet the USA vice president because of United States declaration regarding occupied Jerusalem, according to Al Ray Palestinian Media Agency. Instead, he said, preoccupied by concerns about their own stability, the Arab leaders signalled that - while they may not like the decision - they "will find a way to work with it", and "with a White House that is prepared to break with what had been taboos in American foreign policy".

Israeli leaders have long said Jerusalem has been quietly cultivating its ties with Arab states, in the face of commons threats posed by Iran and Islamist extremism. He told the hosts that instead of condemning the decision, they should persuade their viewers to accept it. Palestinians, he suggested, should content themselves with the dreary West Bank town that now houses the Palestinian Authority, Ramallah. Pence is expected to meet only with el-Sissi, a leading Trump ally, while in Egypt.

Kholi allegedly told the news hosts, "How is Jerusalem different from Ramallah, really?" according to the Times report.

Trump's announcement in early December declaring Jerusalem to be Israel's capital along with USA plans to move the US embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv shook up decades of US foreign policy ahead of Pence's planned visit.

"I am friends with Ashraf and we talk all the time", the Times reported Megahed as saying in the interview. The U.S. motion to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital was rejected by the U.N. Security Council and condemned by global leaders.
