Tamil Nadu bus strike: Nobody missed the bus in Vellore

Normal life in Tamil Nadu would continue to remain affected with the transport workers unions on Friday announcing their decision to continue their indefinite strike until their demands are met rejecting the Madras High Court direction and Tamil Nadu government's appeal to call off strike. The striking employees belong to 17 unions.

"The new wage structure had the highest revision proposed with a minimum of Rs2,684 and a maximum of Rs11,361. hope the employees get back to work", the minister said.

Stating that the High Court order to call off the strike goes against natural justice, the unions blamed the government for the inconvenience caused to the commuters.

Arguing on behalf of the state government, counsel Vijay Narayan said that a wage agreement had been signed with the workers.

"There will be an interim order restraining the transport workers, specially, the drivers and conductors, from taking recourse to strike", the court said. Transport minister M R Vijayabhaskar said the government agreed to enhance the wage by 2.44%.

He also warned that strict action will be taken against private buses who charge extra amount from passengers.

He also said that instances of striking employees "intimidating" others who wanted to work had been reported.

"The alternative measures that are being taken by the government will only worsen the problem". The trade unions demand a 2.57 percent hike while the government insisted on 2.44 percent hike.

CITU leader A Soundarrajan said he felt the court had not heard their side and that the unions will put forth their views on Monday before the bench.

"CITU leader A Sounderrajan, who participated in Thursday's talks with the government, said that "not even 10 per cent" of buses were being operated across Tamil Nadu". Soundararajan alleged that the government which have a debt of Rs three lakh crore got money to hike the salary of MLAs to Rs one lakh, increase judges salary by twice and hike wage of TN Public Service Commission members by three times to Rs 1.8 lakh.

Employees affiliated to ruling AIADMK-backed Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai were plying buses, but reports reaching here said a large number of vehicles were off the road in different parts of the state like Chennai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Madurai among others.

Police have been posted at bus depots to prevent any untoward incidents. The strike began on Thursday evening when many bus drivers in Chennai were seen abandoning their buses between 5pm and 8 pm.
