UN Security Council meeting on protests a Trump 'foreign policy blunder' - Iran

Meanwhile, Russia urged the US not to interfere in what Moscow calls Iran's "domestic affairs", TASS news agency cited Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Thursday as saying.

But Russia accuses the United States of interfering in Iran's national affairs and called for closed-door talks just before the council's meeting, scheduled for 3:00 pm (2000 GMT).

Ambassadors for the 15 countries sitting on the Security Council met privately before an emergency session called by the United States over what U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley called the "troubling and unsafe situation in Iran".

A total of 21 people have died and hundreds have been arrested since December 28 as protests over economic woes turned against the Iranian regime, with attacks on government buildings and police stations.

Haley said that "in the end, the Iranian people will determine their own destiny", and she reiterated USA support for the protesters.

U.S. President Donald Trump and members of his administration have praised the anti-government protesters as people standing up to a repressive and corrupt regime.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley has praised the anti-government demonstrators as courageous freedom-seekers who need the world's support. China, Bolivia and new member Equatorial Guinea are the countries most likely to have an objection, as they claim the protest is an internal matter for Iran and not a matter that involves global peace and security. "The Iranian regime is now on notice, the world will be watching what you do".

Differences in opinion between the United States and Europe over how to address the situation in Iran may also manifest themselves during the emergency meeting on Friday.

Diplomats expect Russian Federation to try to block the formal council meeting by requesting a procedural vote to decide whether the situation in Iran should be on the agenda.

Discussing the domestic situation of Iran at the council "does not help resolve the domestic issue of Iran", said China's Deputy UN Ambassador Wu Haitao. The CIA declined to comment. These protests were followed on Saturday and Wednesday by large demonstrations in support of the government. He also has described Iran as "failing at every level" and declared it is "TIME FOR CHANGE!" The days of pro-government rallies drew crowds in the tens of thousands.
