Black Lives Matter Leader Shot Dead in New Orleans

The shooting is now being investigated and being ruled as a homicide.

The South Carolina native is best known for his legendary leap over yellow police tape, attempting to tear down a Confederate flag during a protest in Charleston, SC.

A Black Lives Matter activist who made headlines past year when he leaped through police tape to away from a protester was fatally shot in New Orleans early Tuesday morning.

Dozens of activists took to social media to express their sadness at Moye's death, including well-known Black Lives Matter organizer Deray McKesson, who tweeted that Moye was "a force and an incredible guy".

At the time, demonstrations were going on outside a theater at the College of Charleston for a speech by Bree Newsome, an activist who climbed a flagpole and temporarily removed a Confederate flag from in front of the South Carolina Statehouse in 2015. He was transported to the hospital, where he died later that morning, according to police spokesman Beau Tidwell.

Moye was active in the movement for racial justice after the police killing of Walter Scott.

Thomas Dixon, head of the activist group The Coalition and a mayoral candidate for North Charleston says he plans to stand outside City Hall this evening to "peacefully remember Muhiyidin and to pray", according to The Charleston City Paper, and anyone else who wants to pay their respects is more than welcome. "We all have lost so much, so very much, whether you know it or not", the friend added, asking people to donate to help bring d'Baha's body home. #BlackLivesMatter, " wrote Sarah Eaman on Moye's GoFundMe page.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by his niece Camille J Weaver, which has already exceeded its initial target of $7,500 and is now sitting on $19,385. He had one of the most attractive souls I've ever known. But his power of Love was his greatest gift.

ABC News 4 has reached out to New Orleans Police for more information on the circumstances of Moye's death.
