Deaths From Measles Outbreak 'Quadrupled' In Europe Last Year

Measles cases across Europe increased by 400% in 2017 with more than 20,000 people affected and 35 deaths.

The large-scale outbreaks occurred in countries where vaccine uptake was low or vaccine supplies were interrupted, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The surge in measles cases in 2017 included large outbreaks in 15 of the 53 European countries.

Lower rates of vaccination may have been behind the spike, the organization stated.

"The elimination of both measles and rubella is a priority goal that all European countries have firmly committed to - and a cornerstone for achieving the health-related [UN] Sustainable Development Goals", continued Jakab.

NBC notes that measles is highly infectious, affecting 90 percent of unvaccinated people exposed to it, and that to control the disease, 95 percent of a population must either be immunized or previously infected with the virus. "This short-term setback can not deter us from our commitment to be the generation that frees our children from these diseases once and for all".

World Health Organization reported that there were over 1,200 suspected cases in Ireland during 2017.

More than 21,000 cases of the extremely contagious illness were reported, including about 5,000 in Romania, Italy and Ukraine. The measles vaccine can protect children against the disease, and is about 97 percent effective after two doses.

The best way to protect yourself from measles is to get the MMR vaccine.

Malta remained measles-free despite a Europe-wide surge of the disease previous year, according to a surveillance report by the World Health Organisation.

Further findings revealed none of the children had autism, non-specific colitis or symptoms within days of receiving the MMR vaccine, yet the study claimed six of the participants suffered all three.

The measles rash is made up of red or brown blotches. The highest numbers of affected people were reported in Romania (5562), Italy (5006) and Ukraine (4767). This is given twice - at 12 months of age and again at four-to-five years - as part of the routine immunisation programme.

If people are unsure of their vaccination status they are advised to get an MMR vaccine, as even if they do have 2 doses of MMR a third dose is not harmful.
