House Republicans Open Investigation Into White House Handling Of Porter Scandal

In his letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Gowdy asked whether the FBI "played any role in the adjudications of Porter's interim and final clearances", and if so whether they were consistent with bureau policy.

A major congressional committee on Tuesday launched an investigation into how the White House handled allegations of domestic abuse against former aide Rob Porter, its Republican chairman, Trey Gowdy, told CNN on Wednesday.

The White House has asserted that Porter's background investigation was ongoing and that officials first learned the extent of accusations against him only last week, just before Porter abruptly resigned.

Ryan said that with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program tied up in courts, the March 5 deadline set by the Trump administration is "not as important", though he added that Congress operates better with a timeline.

Kelly is "a big fat liar", said one White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share a candid opinion. McGahn told Kelly last fall there was concern about information in the background investigation involving Porter's ex-wives, the official said, and Kelly expressed surprise that Porter had previously been married. Coats said, "We have a broken system and I think everybody's come to agree with that now".

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) has been petitioning Gowdy to open a probe into the security clearance issues at the White House, including why a number of aides are working under interim clearances more than a year into the administration. He called for limits on the information made accessible to those with temporary clearances - a practice that is now not followed in the West Wing, an official said.

The White House approach has drawn criticism even from Trump's own party.
