Kenya's Raila Odinga is 'sworn in' as president in big opposition rally

On Tuesday the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) which continues to claim fraud and wants another election to be held, intends to stage its own "swearing-in" ceremony in the capital Nairobi, hoping to pressure the government for talks.

The new title was the reason for a heated debate across the different social media platforms as his supporters and those of Jubilee clashed over its interpretation and its use as far as presidency goes.

During a speech lasting less than five minutes, Odinga declined to give details of his plans and said they would be disclosed in "due course".

"Today's step is one step towards the doing away with electoral autocracy and to establishing proper democracy in our country".

"We have arrived in Canaan; thank you for staying the course with us".

Releasing the Memo Would Be 'Extraordinarily Reckless'
House Republicans are also calling for the release of the underlying documentation, to refute Schiff's accusations. The more complete copy of the exchange shows Page appearing to discourage Strzok from joining the Mueller team.

Odinga's running mate, Kalonzo Musyoka, was to have been similarly "sworn in" as deputy president, but was not present. I have seen this happen in Nigeria before, when Chief Abiola declared himself president.

When protests erupted after the repeat election, security forces fired live ammunition on demonstrators and bystanders, according to the Kenya National Commission for Human Rights, killing at least 30 people. Following the boycott, president Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor, with over 98% of the vote, granting him a second term in office.

"My appeal to Odinga is allow Kenya, a relatively stable economy in East Africa to continue the steady economic gains it is making".

Bishop Alfred Rotich, the head of the country's military diocese, has urged dialogue to calm the crisis, and said religious leaders have a key role to play in the process.

Police later arrested Tom Kajwang, an opposition lawmaker who administered Odinga's "oath of office", James Orengo, an opposition senator, told Reuters.

Seine still rising in Paris; Louvre partially closed
The capital's bateaux mouches rivercraft was out of service, and only emergency services were authorised to navigate the Seine. Meteo France , the national weather service, said December and January have been the third wettest on record since 1900.

"This action of Odinga should not be dismissed with a wave of hand". There is danger looming, if the situation is not carefully handled,"Dr Kari said".

The interior minister also said the top three TV stations and some radio stations will remain shut down while being investigated for their alleged role in what he called an attempt to "subvert and overthrow" Kenyatta's government.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government, in a surprise move, after declaring the ceremony illegal, withdrew hundreds of heavily armed policemen just immediately after the crowds started gathering at the grounds.

The movement is a loose grouping led by Mr. Odinga and other lawmakers that tried to rally support in November for a boycott of some products whose owners it says are aligned with government interests.

Opposition supporters claim Odinga won the August vote.
