Led coalition bombs pro-government forces

The Euphrates River, flowing through Northeastern Syria, serves as a demarcation line between the US backed SDF and Russian Federation and Iran backed pro regime forces believed to be active around the city of Deir el-Zour. The official said they have not ruled out that Iranian backed-forces might have also been involved in the attack.

The flare-up lasted into the small hours of Thursday and was sparked by an attack on positions held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Deir Ezzor province.

One US official said the pro-government forces may have been trying to seize the Khusham oil fields. Iranian forces are known to be deployed in the area, as are some Russians, either of whom might be labeled as "pro-Assad" by the United States government, but the attacking of which could have substantial ramifications.

According to reports a headquarters of the Syrian Democratic Forces came under fire from artillery and tanks.

No American troops were killed or wounded in the incident, officials said.

Syrian state media said on Thursday the USA -led coalition had bombed "popular forces fighting (Islamic State) and the (Syrian Democratic Forces) east of the Euphrates river" in Deir al-Zor, causing casualties.

A US official told CNN that the attackers crossed the Euphrates armed with artillery and other weapons.

"In defense of Coalition and partner forces, the Coalition conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression against partners engaged in the Global Coalition's defeat-Daesh [ISIS] mission", read the statement.

According to another official speaking to CNN, the US-backed Coalition was "in regular communication" with Russian military forces in the area.
