New ANC leader in 'constructive' talks with SA president Jacob Zuma

The ANC did not say what had been decided at the meeting between Mr Zuma and the party's "top six" leadership team at Mr Zuma's home in Pretoria, but it summoned its National Working Committee (NWC) to an urgent meeting on Monday afternoon (local time).

But leaked comments from senior ANC official Paul Mashatile suggested that at the weekend Zuma was digging in.

The man poised to replace him, Ramphosa, said only that they had been busy discussing "pertinent matters". A series of leaked emails previous year suggested the Gupta family, who are friends of Zuma and in business with his son, had advance knowledge of Nene's firing and influenced other cabinet appointments.
