Red Raiders No. 3 seed in NCAA bracket preview

Red Raiders No. 3 seed in NCAA bracket preview

Virginia, Villanova and Purdue may have all lost last week, but that has not affected their standing in the NCAA tournament committee's eyes.

The NCAA Selection Committee made the announcement Sunday morning in its second preview show in as many years.

The Boilermakers were placed in the West Region, joined there by No. 2 Kansas, No. 3 North Carolina and No. 4 Arizona.

Along with those seven, the rest of the top-16 contains Kansas (two seed), Duke (two seed), Cincinnati (two seed), Texas Tech (three seed), Michigan State (three seed), North Carolina (three seed), Ohio State (four seed), Arizona (four seed) and Oklahoma (four seed).

As the South's No. 1, the Cavaliers (23-2, 12-1 ACC) would likely open tournament play in Charlotte, N.C., the closest of the eight first-weekend venues to Charlottesville.

"The committee was pretty strong in their consensus of the No. 1 seeds", said NCAA Tournament chair and Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen. "You just embrace the challenge and you go at it a game at a time".

"Despite UVA's loss Saturday, we felt that based on their 13 wins in the first two quadrants, they deserved to remain on top".

Villanova was selected as the second No. 1 seed (East Region).

Midwest: 1. Xavier, 2.

Clemson University men's basketball was projected as a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament as the Division I men's basketball committee revealed a sneak peek at its top 16 teams as of mid-February. When the bracket came out past year, 15 of the teams were among the 16 we revealed in February. I certainly would have been excited, but again, it's always about quality of play.

The Tigers, now 20-4 overall and 9-3 in second-place in the ACC, play at Florida State Wednesday night for a 7:05 tipoff.
