The policy statements from Washington, the brand new regiment of sanctions and the appointment of incoming national security adviser, John Bolton - a foreign policy radical, who unequivocally supports wars with Iran and North Korea, indicates the Trump administration's readiness to take on Tehran.

Iran basically believes in no other solution than a political one to the conflict in Yemen, Khoshrou said.

Qassemi also rejected the claims on the provision of Yemenis with missiles and said, "By leveling baseless and imaginary accusations without evidence against others, the Saudis are trying to cover up their inability and consecutive defeats they have suffered ... in the war against Yemeni people despite possessing ... a collection of advanced weapons and multi-billion-dollar arms purchases". Saudi officials aren't concerned, however, as they're threatening to attack Iran over he missiles instead.

The Saudi government has threatened Tehran with retaliation after Houthi rebels fired seven missiles into Saudi Arabia last weekend.

"With adventurism and inexperience, the Saudis have helped inflict cholera on millions of Yemeni people and targeted children and civilians in the course of their bombardments", he said.

Khoshrou also expressed dismay at the sale of U.S. weapons to Saudi Arabia, calling on the Muslin world and the global community to pressure Saudi Arabia to stop killings in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia is leading a mostly Arab military coalition to fight Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015.

The Iranian spokesman made the remarks in response to a joint statement by British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt earlier in the day, in which the two urged Iran to stop sending weapons to the Houthis.

The Houthis expelled pro-government forces from the capital Sanaa in September 2014 and went on to seize swathes of the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country. They were once strong enough to force the legitimate government to flee, but the Saudi-led Arab coalition has weakened them.

About 10,000 Yemenis have been killed and 53,000 wounded since the start of the coalition intervention in Yemen.
