Ex-FIFA chief Sepp Blatter against using VAR at World Cup

Video Assistant Referees (VAR) being used at this year's FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation moved closer today after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) unanimously approved the technology for inclusion in the laws of the game.

The IFAB took the decision during its 132nd Annual General Meeting held at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, which was attended by the global federation's president, Gianni Infantino, reports Efe.

"It will have a positive impact on the World Cup and on the matches, this is what the result of studies show", Infantino said.

In contrast, Rochdale manager Keith Hill said the VAR system created excitement.

When asked about Lamela's goal, Halsey told BBC Five Live: "For me it wasn't a clear and obvious error".

Real Madrid vs Getafe: how and where to watch
Deportivo La Coruna's winless streak under coach Clarence Seedorf increased to five matches after drawing with Eibar 1-1 at home. The hosts played a man down from the 39th as goalkeeper Maksym Koval was sent off for a foul outside the area.

Before today's vote in Zurich, IFAB technical director and former World Cup referee David Elleray said VARs were "the most significant single change there has been" to the way football is played at the highest level.

The problems have been so widespread that UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has said the system will not be used in next season's European Champions League regardless of the IFAB decision.

Infantino has argued that, in competitions where VAR is already in use on a trial basis, the number of mistakes have been reduced. I am not sure that the system is going to help.

So there will be VAR at the World Cup? .

Retrospective bans will still be used to punish players deemed by review panels to have escaped a red card or to have dived to win a penalty.

Lambert The Man To Keep Stoke Up? He would have to, as Leicester sensed the three points were there for the taking. Stoke's last three away games have ended with more than 2.5 goals, and we are backing the same as our prediction.

The change was unanimously approved in a meeting in Zurich even though only six of eight votes were needed.

VAR has been trialled in some FA Cup and Carabao Cup games this season, but following Saturday's ruling all competitions in world football can now use VAR without permission. Those reservations clearly didn't affect proceedings as the final decision remained unanimous.

Of course, the game between Spurs and Rochdale is not the first controversy VAR has caused since its introduction, and if its use carries on it certainly won't be the last either.

But the whole system needs more clarity when it comes to the length of time the game is held up, especially when no-one in the crowd knows what is being discussed.

27 January - In West Brom's victory at Liverpool, the referee and VAR consulted to rule out a goal for Albion's Craig Dawson for offside, and a penalty was awarded to Liverpool - which they missed - after the referee consulted the pitchside TV monitor.
