India, France vow to strengthen defence, energy ties

Following extensive talks between PM Modi and President Macron, India and France signed 14 pacts in the strategic areas of security, nuclear energy and protection of classified information including an agreement on "reciprocal logistical support" by the armed forces of both sides.

French President Macron on Saturday said defence ties with India had reached a new high after the two nations signed a key security accord for the Indian Ocean to counter China's growing influence in the region.

"France and India have shared concerns with regard to the emerging challenges in the Indian Ocean Region that include: "maritime traffic security in the face of the threats of terrorism and piracy, especially in the Horn of Africa; respect of worldwide law by all States" - especially with regard freedom of navigation and overflight", the Joint Strategic Vision said.

French and Indian companies signed contracts worth 13 billion euros ($16 billion) on the first day of President Emmanuel Macron's visit to India on Saturday, the French presidency said in a statement.
