Oakland mayor defends warning of immigration raids: I did the right thing

Even though 150 illegal aliens were arrested in ICE's latest Bay Area operation, almost 900 were able to avoid the raids because Democratic Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tipped off the communities' illegal population via social media, announcing that "multiple credible sources" informed her about the raids, which she said were to take place "within 24 hours".

Jim Ross, an Oakland political consultant, said Schaaf's warning could help rebuild trust with immigrant-advocacy organizations that may have disagreed with her defense of a West Oakland operation by ICE's Homeland Security Investigations division last August, during which city cops provided traffic control.

On Tuesday, the immigration agency said that since Sunday, it had arrested more than 150 people in the Bay Area who were in violation of immigration laws. Around half of the illegal immigrants arrested have past criminal history, including assault and weapons charges as well as other violent crimes. "ICE has a track record of lying to us", said Oakland City Council member Rebecca Kaplan, who was initially critical of Schaaf's issuing of a broad public warning. "We believe our community is safer when families stay together".

The mayor has local defenders like UC Hastings College of the Law immigration professor Richard Boswell, who says "She's trying to keep some level of peace within the community".

Two men were detained at an Atwater home by ICE agents who identified themselves to the family as "police" and not immigration enforcement, advocates said.

Trilce Santana said she was doing so in an intentional effort to prevent ICE from transporting detainees out of the area.

"The Administration continues to brazenly target the cities that refuse to bow to its blatantly bigoted anti-immigrant and mass deportation agenda", Pelosi concluded her statement.

Michael Cardoza, a former Alameda County prosecutor turned criminal defense lawyer, believes they could - especially if she received the information about the raids through official sources, which Schaaf insists she did not.

ICE has sent repeated hard-line messages since President Donald Trump took office past year, declaring that undocumented immigrants should "look over [their] shoulder" and that politicians in sanctuary states should be prosecuted.

A spokesman for Schaaf on Monday said the calls and social media messages were largely from out of state and called for her to be removed from office.

Schaaf did not tell people to resist immigration agents, nor did she condone any obstruction of law enforcement activity.

"We've often seen that actual confirmed reports that come through the local rapid-response networks and the hotlines are usually just a small percentage of how many people are actually being picked up", said Hamid Yazdan Panah with the Northern California Rapid Response and Immigrant Defense Network.

David Chiu, a Democratic state assemblyman, said Trump 'has declared war on our immigrant communities'. "My priority is for the long-term well-being of Oakland, and I know that our city is safer when we share information that leads to community awareness".
