Senators to force vote on USA involvement in Yemen war

United States lawmakers are seeking to end USA military support for the Saudi-led coalition against members of the Houthi rebel group in Yemen. But the efforts to repeal the existing war powers have faced plenty of opposition, which now includes President Donald Trump's administration. "It can authorize - or decline to authorize - military engagement and define US national interests". "Under this legislation, no longer would US pilots serve as gas station attendants in the sky to refuel Saudi and UAE bombers that rein down terror on Yemeni men, women, and children".

The resolution is also shedding light on US involvement and complicity in creating the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Earlier this week, the commander of U.S. Central Command, Army Gen. Joseph Votel, told lawmakers that the support was being provided under bilateral arms sales and logistical agreements. The AUMFs gave the president wide-ranging authority to direct the military to fight terrorist groups such as al-Qaida, the Taliban and Islamic State around the world.

"Every strike advances the defeat of violent extremist organizations, and protects the United States and partner nations from attack at home and overseas", Army Lt. Col. Earl Brown, a U.S. Central Command spokesman, said in a statement last month. But lawyers and human rights groups have argued that the AUMF 2001 has become stale, rendering it void and unlawful to engage in Yemen.

The joint resolution, sponsored by two senators from opposite ends of the ideological spectrum, independent Bernie Sanders, Republican Mike Lee, and Democrat Chris Murphy, is a rare effort by Congress to claw back its war powers from the executive branch.

The two said that they would try to move the resolution through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but the committee may table it. A year later came the final obliteration of Aleppo, Syria's historical commercial capital, in large part due to Russian air power. All diplomatic initiatives, whether UN- or Russian-led, have been used to the regime's advantage and to further military gains.

Senate rules require a vote on the resolution by March 9.

In November 2017 a similar resolution sponsored by Congressman Ro Khanna was passed.
