Allegiant Air Safety Called Into Question

Nelson's request comes on the heels of a scathing report aired Sunday evening on CBS's "60 Minutes" that raised questions about the airline's safety record and the FAA's record of responding to it.

Last night, CBS 60 Minutes aired a report that found more than 100 serious incidents involving mechanical issues on Allegiant Air flights occurred from January 1, 2016, to the end of October 2017.

Allegiant's vice president of operations, Capt. Eric Gust, issued a statement after the program that said the story was outdated and shows a "troubling misunderstanding" of the Federal Aviation Administration's safety oversight of airlines. He says he has flown many times on Allegiant. I urge you to specifically review all internal communications between the FAA and Allegiant to ensure that no efforts are being undertaken to impede a full and forthright investigation of the airline's maintenance and operational issues. Allegiant also disputes the "60 Minutes" report, saying it complies with all FAA requirements.

"That pilot, Jason Kinzer, claims that he was wrongfully terminated after an evacuation".

Allegiant's stock price fell 3% to about $146 Monday. It said he has been a pilot for close to 20 years and has worked at Allegiant for four years. "We were flying 280,000 out of that airport in the late 70's", said Wilhoit.

Captain Eric Gust, Allegiant Air's vice president of operations, said: "The story is outdated, bears no resemblances to the Allegiant I know, and shows a real and troubling misunderstanding of the FAA's rigorous oversight of Allegiant and all US airlines, which is truly the worldwide gold standard in transportation safety".

In regular reviews since then, the FAA "has not identified any significant or systemic problems with the carrier's current operation".

It was his first time flying Allegiant.
