Apple's Tim Cook criticises Facebook's data collection practices

Apple CEO Tim Cook took a serious jab Wednesday at fellow Silicon Valley bigwig Mark Zuckerberg and his company, Facebook, as large portions of the public and officials across the world are raking both over the coals. "We've elected not to do that", he said. And we're not going to traffic in your personal life. Cook repeated the mantra of his predecessor, the late Steve Jobs, that maintaining user privacy is important to Apple in contrast to its competitors.

Speaking in Beijing last week, Cook said the Cambridge Analytica scandal had become "so dire and has become so large that probably some well-crafted regulation is necessary".

Cook also said that even though "the best regulation is no regulation, is self-regulation", he thinks Facebook has moved beyond that point. "However, I think we're beyond that here".

We could make a ton of money if we monetized our customers.

"I think it's their decision". Facebook has been caught in a medial maelstrom over its lax approach to data sharing; specifically over the Cambridge Analytica issue, through which it was recently revealed that Facebook users' data was being used by the firm with the intent to influence the 2016 USA election. It's a civil liberty, and something that is unique to America.

"The recent news about Facebook's alleged mismanagement of users' data has solidified our decision to suspend our activity on the platform at this time", Playboy Enterprises said. Now he has to deal with a #DeleteFacebook campaign that is trending, and is expected to testify before Congress on how something like this could happen in the first place. "I wouldn't be in this situation", Cook said.

Best bets for the Final Four
We're finally here, the Final Four. "Today was good", Self said of KU's practice in Lawrence, before the team headed to Texas. Booth is their defensive specialist, while DiVincenzo is the third leading scorer and brings lots of energy to the squad.

Cook's interview is part of MSNBC's "Revolution" series, which will air on April 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

What do you think of Tim Cook's comments?

However, Cook appears to have worked out that Apple's target market is not right-wing neo-conservative Christians in the USA bible belt, but young upwardly mobile kids in cities who have more money than sense and know little about technology. Cook feels this sort of data collection is a result of Facebook treating their users as the product instead of the customer.
