Criticizing 'career politicians,' Gov. Rick Scott says he's running for Senate

Nelson had a 46 percent to 42 percent edge over Scott in the Senate contest, according to the poll.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced on Monday that he'll challenge Sen.

"This concept of career politicians has got to stop", he said. Washington is exhausted. And the truth is, both political parties share some of the blame. It also offers a test of whether a tight alliance with Trump provides more help or harm in the current political environment. The Republican Governor endorsed President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election after he won the Florida primary.

During his campaign speech, Scott cited the turnaround in Florida's economy during his time in office.

Scott, who because of term limits can not run for a third term as governor, is a close ally of Trump.

Scott ran as a Tea Party candidate in 2010, emphasizing his success as a businessman and promising job creation. Democrats are defending 26 seats, including two independents who caucus with them, while Republicans are only defending eight.

Nelson, in a brief statement, said he is ready for Scott.

"We need need to send people up there for doers, I think what we do is send talkers", said Scott. Thats one reason Scott wants to make term limits an issue in this race, besides the obvious populist appeal.

President Trump has urged Scott to seek the seat, including during public events in Florida.

He made the announcement 8 years after he launched his race for governor, saying he "did something that everyone told me not to do".

Rick Scott, in a button-down blue shirt and Navy ball cap, waded into a crowd of supporters Monday, with the Secretary of State of Puerto Rico by his side, and declared he wants to be Florida's next USA senator. Last year, he collaborated with Sen. Bill Nelson (D) in November's general election.

The approach made Scott one of the most unpopular governors in the nation, but that has changed in recent years as Scott has moderated his tone and his policy proposals - he backed Medicaid expansion at one point and has pushed for more environmental spending - while making outreach efforts to a broader spectrum of voters, particularly Hispanics. "I mean the list just goes on and on and on".
