Dutch lawyer is first sentenced in Mueller's US-Russia probe

He had pleaded guilty on February 20 as Mueller intensified his investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, and is the first person to be sentenced in the probe.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, Van der Zwaan had faced zero to six months in prison. The false statements concerned e-mail communications and phone calls between him and Richard Gates, an ex-campaign aide to President Donald Trump.

"This was more than a mistake".

Berman Jackson concluded, however, that "the expressions of remorse here by the defendant. have been somewhat muted to say the least". He is the son-in-law of Ukranian-Russian billionaire German Khan.

In pleading guilty, van der Zwaan admitted that he withheld and deleted emails, and also that he lied to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about previous communications with Manafort protege Gates and a person who worked for Manafort in Ukraine identified as "Person A". Gates and Manafort worked closely with Yanukovych before he was removed from power in 2014.

Van der Zwaan does have a prominent connection to Russian Federation beyond his work with Gates and Manafort - his father-in-law is Alfa Bank co-founder German Khan, one of the country's richest men.

The Dutch lawyer is now the first person to be sentenced as part of Mueller's investigation.

The charges appear minor, but Mueller has always been insistent that van der Zwaan serve time in jail for his misstatement. "This glass was dropped on a very thick carpet and it has cushioned the blow", Jackson said.

He looked the judge in the eye and said, "What I did was wrong. I apologise to this court, and I apologise to my wife", Mr van der Zwaan said at the sentencing hearing.

Since his return in December, Schwartz said, van der Zwaan has been walled up in a residential hotel in Washington and unable to return to London, where his wife is undergoing a hard first pregnancy.

"He has been here well over four months without a home, without his wife and without his family", his attorney, William Schwartz, said.

People can't lie to prosecutors and get away with it, Weissmann added.

Van Der Zwaan was questioned by the DoJ in November about his work as an attorney for the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, and about his connections to Manafort and Gates, who previously served as lobbyists in Ukraine on behalf of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his Party of Regions.

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and tax evasion. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is seeking to have the case against him dismissed.

Manafort's longtime deputy Rick Gates, 45, was initially charged jointly with Manafort but pleaded guilty to reduced charges last month and is now cooperating with Mueller's probe. Among them are a former White House national security adviser and a Trump campaign foreign policy aide.

In a detailed, 53-page defense, Mueller's team countered late Monday that an investigation of possible links between the Trump campaign and Russia would "naturally cover ties" between the campaign's chairman and "Russian associated political operatives, Russian-backed politicians and Russian oligarchs".
