European Union programme targets €2.1bn boost for venture capital

"In the future, all public services will use blockchain technology".

"While we have supported more than 500 funds to date, this is the first time that the European Union has created such a unique programme".

An executive from the institution tasked with overseeing European regulation is offering new praise for blockchain technology.

During the Europe Commission's Digital Day 2018, which held on Tuesday 10th April in Brussels, the VP of the Commission, Andrus Ansip, gave a speech in which he urged the Europe Union (EU) to become the leading role in digital innovation by adopting the Blockchain technology, along with Artificial Intelligence (AI). "With VentureEU, Europe's many innovative entrepreneurs will soon get the investment they need to innovate and grow into global success stories", Commission vice-president Jyrki Katainen, responsible for jobs, growth, investment and competitiveness, said.

The signatories agreed to co-operate to establish the partnership with a view to developing a blockchain infrastructure that can enhance value-based, trusted, user-centric digital services across borders within the Digital Single Market.

Separately, the European Commission is proposing EU-wide fines of up to 4 percent of a company's annual turnover in each member state for firms found guilty of widespread infringements.

The European Commission believes that the decentralised and collaborative nature of blockchain and its applications will allow member states to exploit the "full scale of the Digital Single Market from the outset". The press release states that the EC has now invested more than 80 mln euros in blockchain projects already and now has 300 mln euros to be distributed to blockchain development by the year 2020. "The Partnership launched today enables Member States to work together with the European Commission to turn the enormous potential of blockchain technology into better services for citizens".

The EU will provide the first lump sum of €410 million, which will be made up of €67 million from the European Investment Fund, €200 million from the Horizon 2020 InnovFin Equity, €105 million from COSME and €105 million from the European Fund for Strategic Investments.

The proposal calls for: better public access to information submitted to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) by industry; more public consultations on scientific evidence; and guarantees that studies meet high scientific standards.
