Google celebrates the life of Maya Angelou with new Doodle

Google recruited a star studded cast, including Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, and Laverne Cox, to read Angelou's famous poem "Still I Rise".

Dr. Maya Angelou was a phenomenal woman who lived a full life that, while filled with enormous pain, also created a woman who could smile and laugh so broadly.

Google Doodle celebrated author, poet, memoirist and activist Dr. Maya Angelou's 90th birthday on Wednesday with more than just a picture or interactive image. Lending her voice to President Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993, Angelou was the first poet since Frost to enjoy the honor of the august platform, reading the centuries-spanning epic "On the Pulse of Morning", which she wrote for the occasion.

Throughout her life, Dr. Angelou enjoyed many roles, including San Francisco's first female and black streetcar conductor, professional cabaret singer and dancer, journalist, civil rights activist and finally a prominent author following the success of her first book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1969.

March, normally our third wettest month of the year, was our wettest month of the year so far at 5.83 inches of rain. He said it will remain in the 30s, but there is a chance the area could get more snow on Friday and Sunday .

Angelou provided eloquent commentary on race, gender and living life to its fullest in writing which brought her wide acclaim. And when a woman writes, she not only takes charge of voicing her own stories but also asserts her presence. "She is a national treasure we should always celebrate".

She was raped at the age of eight by her mother's boyfriend. She was an eloquent and articulate poet, who used her voice to weave tales that resonated with African-Americans across the nation. "She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence, and a fiery, fierce grace and abounding love." .

Johnson, who partnered with Google on the Doodle with his wife Stephanie Floyd-Johnson, also commented on his mother and her legacy.

It was Bailey who gave her the nickname "Maya", which came from "My" or "May Sister". Her words have been implemented by the women's movements for social justice and equality. She saw all our differences in language, orientation and perspective as an indication of the richness of our imagination and creativity, and as elements of our nature that we should celebrate.
