Patton Oswalt credits late wife Michelle in Golden State Killer case

Within hours, police in the United States announced the arrest of a 72-year-old former police officer in connection with the killings, and Oswalt praised his late wife for her persistence. Oswalt added that police have never credited a writer for helping to solve a case, but he added that in this case they gave Michelle credit every time they used her coined term, "Golden State Killer".

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested at his Sacramento home Tuesday on a warrant stemming from two of the murders perpetrated by the Golden State Killer. DeAngelo was arrested after police matched discarded DNA evidence from his Sacramento area home with genetic evidence from the crimes, Ventura County District Attorney Greg Totten said.

"Just the fact that they said the book didn't help but then said, 'We've got the Golden State Killer, ' it's a bit contradictory", Jensen said.

"There's exhilaration, and I don't feel it now, but I can sense that tomorrow or the next day there's going to be a huge drop in serotonin and happiness when I realize she really isn't here", Oswalt said in an interview.

But McNamara's idea for the "Golden State Killer" name, her coverage of the case in "Los Angeles Magazine" and a blog, the shocking news of her death, and the book all shined a spotlight on the decades-old crimes, he said.

At the end of his thread of tweets about the twist in the final story McNamara documented, Oswalt wrote sweet words to his new wife.

Two years ago, nearly to the day, crime writer Michelle McNamara was found dead in her Los Angeles home.

McNamara's husband - best known for playing Remy the Rat in the film Ratatouille and Spencer Olchin in the sitcom The King of Queens - insisted on Twitter that the book played a role, but said his wife would not have cared whether that was acknowledged.

But those familiar with McNamara and her work said that interest was a key part in seeing this case solved.

"He was very surprised by that", Jones said. "It happened nearly instantly and he was taken into custody without incident at all".

Oswalt and McNamara's fans couldn't help but notice the parallels with DeAngelo's arrest and how her book ends, with a message directly to the Golden State Killer. But McNamara died before she could see the killer brought to justice or her book published.

"One day soon, you'll hear a auto pull up to your curb, an engine cut out", McNamara wrote. You'll hear footsteps coming up your front walk like they did for Edward Wayne Edwards, 29 years after he killed Timothy Hack and Kelly Drew in Sullivan, Wisconsin. The doorbell rings.
