Paul Ryan endorses Kevin McCarthy as his successor for speaker

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy picked up an endorsement from Paul Ryan in his bid to succeed the current House Speaker.

"I was encouraged that Steve Scalise this morning said that he thinks that after the election that Kevin McCarthy ought to be the person to replace me", Ryan told reporters.

McCarthy unsuccessfully ran for the speakership in 2015 but withdrew after failing to gain the support of the conservative wing of his party. "I've never run against Kevin and wouldn't run against Kevin", Scalise said Thursday on Fox News.

A big factor in McCarthy's favor is his close personal relationship with President Trump.

"One of the reasons why I was comfortable making this decision is because we have a very capable leadership team", Ryan said.

So far, despite speculation over a possibly contentious battle brewing between the two, McCarthy and Scalise have stayed above the fray.

Neither McCarthy nor Scalise have yet declared their intentions, though both men have been jockeying behind the scenes for the top spot in the House GOP conference.

Scalise and Jordan combined can deny McCarthy the necessary votes.

"It would be a real honor for Bakersfield to have the next speaker of the House to be our Congressman who was born and raised here". House Republicans are now expected to hold their leadership elections in November following the midterm elections. If they decide to put up their own long-shot candidate like Jordan, that would draw conservative votes away from McCarthy and step up the likelihood that the No. 2 Republican would seek to cut a deal with the group. McCarthy was also considered the favorite in his first bid for speaker before protest from the conservative wing of the caucus derailed his bid.
