A van tore through an unsuspecting crowd enjoying a sunny Saturday afternoon in the German City of Muenster, killing at least three and injuring 20 more.

Authorities are treating the incident as a deliberate attack, CNN reported, citing a police spokesperson.

Police said the driver shot himself dead after crashing the van into families sitting outside the popular Grosser Kiepenkerl cafe in the centre of the west Germany medieval university town which is 300 miles west of Berlin.

"With dismay, I learned of the bad incident in Muenster", Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said in a statement, adding, "Police in Muenster and throughout (the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia) are now working hard to investigate the matter".

The driver shot and killed himself amid the chaos, police spokesman Andreas Bode told reporters.

German media outlets also said police evacuated buildings around the location of the incident because of a suspicious item that was discovered in the van.

The vehicle which has been descried in some reports as a small truck or van, drove at a crowd of people around the Kiepenkerl Denkmal statue in the northern section of the old town.

Images on German TV showed police and fire vehicles clustered around a street in the center of the city.

Munster Mayor Markus Lewe says the reason for the crash is still unclear. They have urged people in Muenster to avoid the city's downtown area.
