Two athletes kicked out of Commonwealth Games over needles found

It had initially been suggested that five of the 24-strong Cameroonian team had absconded from the Gold Coast 2018 Athletes' Village but Nso revealed the number was actually eight.

Last night, a further three athletes left their rooms, the statement said.

A spokesman for the Australian Border Force said the federal government was working closely with the Games organising committee and global stakeholders to ensure officials and athletes were aware of their visa responsibilities.

These athletes are guests here in Australia.

Another boxer Juma Miiro is already assured of a medal after qualifying for the semifinals in the 46-49kg weight category.

Eight Cameroon athletes - one third of their entire team - have fled the Commonwealth Games, with their whereabouts now unknown.

Molombe expressed sadness following the disappearance of the eight athletes.

"Until it becomes a real issue in terms of visas and so forth we would obviously need to take that very seriously but right now it's a safety and welfare issue for those athletes from a Team Cameroon perspective".

The officials say the five boxers and three weightlifters left the Gold Coast village over the past three days but authorities say they have not broken any law.

Ugandan athletes were also warned against vanishing during Gold Coast 2018 in the lead-up to the event.
