'Violent scourge' on London streets as murder figures overtake NY

The incidents come as figures showed over the weekend that the murder rate in London has overtaken NY.

Writing in the Sun on Sunday, the Conservative MP said: "It is no coincidence the record rise in knife crime comes as there is a dramatic fall in the use of police stop and search powers".

There were 15 murders in London in February against 14 in New York, according to London's Metropolitan Police Service and the New York Police Department.

The Sunday Times reported that it's "the first time in modern history" that London saw more murders in a month than NY.

All of which seems to belie Mayor Khan's contention that his city is "the safest global city in the world, and one of the safest cities in the world".

A relative told NBC News on condition of anonymity that Malala wanted to visit her hometown during this week's trip "at any cost". Malala ended her whirlwind visit with a trip to an an all-boys cadet college before immediately returning to the Islamabad .

London murders for March are also "likely to exceed or equal" the United States city's, the Times reports. The cities have a similar-sized population.

Hours before the attack, detectives launched the 31st knife murder inquiry of the year after Devoy Stapleton, 20, was stabbed to death in Wandsworth, south London.

What makes this notable is that the weapon most often employed in these British murders is a knife. The first quarter of this year has seen 46 murders in the capital.

Describing how she came out of her house when a friend of the victim banged on her door, she said: "I even tried to save her - had to, had to".

A Downing Street spokesman said that the Government's new serious violence strategy will focus on intervention measures meant to "break the cycle" of violent crime.

"There's definitely something about the impact of social media in terms of people being able to go from slightly angry with each other to "fight" very quickly", said Scotland Yard's chief of Knife Crime. "It's looking like it'll be worse that last year, which was worse than the year before", he told Reuters.

She went on: "The auto just pulled up and just started shooting".

"The response so far has been too slow".
