9 killed in multiple blasts in Jalalabad attack

Provincial governor's spokesman Ataullah Khogyani confirmed that the attack ended after five hours of gun battle between the security forces and the assailants.

Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the provincial council, told Reuters that at least four militants, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, are still fighting the police. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but both the Taliban and a local Islamic State affiliate reject democratic elections and have targeted them in the past.

The assault in the eastern city of Jalalabad was the latest deadly violence to strike Afghanistan as militant groups step up attacks and US-backed Afghan forces intensify air strikes and ground offensives. Witnesses said the explosions had caused carnage among passers-by.
