Avengers: Infinity War smashes superhero box office record with £60m takings

The debut of Walt Disney Co.'s (DIS) "Avengers: Infinity War" in China over the weekend drew in $200 million, which now ranks it in the top five global film releases.

The next Star Wars film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, is released on May 24.

The superhero adventure has passed "The Avengers" ($1.519 billion), "Furious 7" ($1.516 billion), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ($1.405 billion), "Black Panther" ($1.229 billion), and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" ($1.332 billion) to become the fifth-highest-grossing global film of all time. The sequel is expected to have a domestic opening north of $150 million.

The first round of sea trials is expected to primarily test the reliability of the carrier's power and propulsion systems. Now the country only has a retrofitted Soviet-era aircraft carrier called the Liaoning , which was launched in 2012.

The Disney blockbuster, featuring a string of Marvel superheroes out to save the universe from powerful purple alien Thanos (Josh Brolin), has had a cumulative take over three weeks of $547.8 million, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

On its way to becoming the biggest Hollywood film in India with net earnings of over Rs 200 crore, Infinity War posted opening weekend numbers of over Rs 120 crore.

"We are honored to be part of the remarkable box office performance of Avengers: Infinity War, which reflects the unprecedented fan anticipation that Marvel has been building over the past decade", says Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX entertainment and senior executive vice president, IMAX Corp.

$200 million opening weekend haul in China powers Avengers: Infinity War's worldwide total to $1.05 billion.

That marks the second-largest opening weekend in China for the Marvel Studios film, in terms of local currency. Count on it. Will it reach "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" at No. 3?

Thanos is restrained in a still from Avengers: Infinity War. The third week and fourth-weekend run would be crucial to the film's final results since 20th Century Fox's Deadpool 2 is slated to release on 18 May in 4,250 locations.
