Egypt embarking on effort to quell Gaza escalation, midnight ceasefire reported

Hamas' deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, using the militant group's term for Israel, said in a statement that, "An agreement was reached to return to the (2014) ceasefire understandings in the Gaza Strip".

Also Tuesday, two fishing boats carrying students and medical patients set sail from Gaza City's port, aiming to reach Cyprus and break the Israeli blockade, which has restricted most activity along the coast. "The resistance factions will abide by it as long as the Occupation does the same", he added, referencing the various other militant groups that participated in Tuesday's attacks.

Israel had said on Tuesday it hit more than 35 targets in the Palestinian enclave after a barrage of rocket and mortar fire from Hamas, that runs the Gaza, and Islamic Jihad.

Israeli cabinet minister Arieh Deri told Israel's Army Radio that he expected calm to be restored.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas condemned what he called Israel's "fierce aggression" against the Gaza Strip. At least 116 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire at mass demonstrations along the border, drawing global condemnation for Israel over its use of lethal force.

The violent clashes between Palestinian protestors and IDF on the Gaza border with Israel erupted in March when the Palestinians started their rallies called the Great March of Return.

The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the firing and said it was in response to Israel's killing of dozens of Palestinians since March 30, mainly in Gaza border protests.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but there was speculation the mortars were fired by Islamic Jihad in revenge for a recent incident that left three of its members dead.

Approximately 25 of the mortars were intercepted by Israel's missile defence system, he said.

Later in the day, further rockets or mortar rounds from Gaza were intercepted by Israel.

Commenting on the projectiles fired towards Israel earlier in the day, she said: "a disaster could have happened that led to war". One exploded in the yard of a kindergarten before it was due to open. Explosions shook the Palestinian enclave and smoke rose from areas hit.

At least 121 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the unrest.
