Kim Fears Coup in NKorea if he Attends Summit With Trump

The planned summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un depends on the North Korean leader, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said.

Trump said Kim had not met unspecified "conditions" for the summit.

Mr Pompeo said the USA was prepared to walk away from the talks and a "bad deal" was not an option. Even so, it is not an irreversible move and would need to be followed by many more significant measures to meet Trump's demands for real denuclearization.

According to a South Korean think tank, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered the executions of hundreds of people since coming to power in 2011.

What did Mr Pompeo say?

"The fate and the future of the Korean Peninsula hinge" on the meeting, South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, told Trump in an Oval Office meeting Tuesday. But Trump also said he believed Kim was "serious" about negotiations.

"A bad deal is not an option".

If it goes ahead, it will be first meeting between a USA and a North Korean leader during more than six decades of hostility, and it would come just months after the North's rapid progress toward attaining a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike America fueled fears of war.

Pompeo steered away from that comparison, but said the United States wants "rapid denuclearisation, total and complete, that won't be extended over time".

Mr Pompeo has twice met Mr Kim in Pyongyang.

Trump expressed suspicion that the North's recent aggressive barbs were influenced by Kim's unannounced trip to China two weeks ago - his second in as many months.

Pyongyang then accused US National Security Adviser John Bolton of making "reckless statements" for his suggestion that the North could follow a "Libya model" of denuclearisation. Pompeo's reformulation of the USA demands was presaged by Trump on Tuesday, when a reporter asked if Kim could be expected to give up his nuclear capabilities all at once. He's said he will succeed where his predecessors failed in persuading North Korea to give up its ambitions to become a nuclear superpower.
