Nintendo Switch Online Will Launch Classic NES Games

A yearly subscription is $19.99 and finally, there will be a "family membership" option, allowing you to pay $34.99 a year and have Switch Online functionality across 8 Nintendo accounts on different consoles.

Online multiplayer hasn't always been the best aspect of Nintendo's consoles, but with the Switch, there have been signs that things might change for the better. Most Nintendo Switch games will be stored online for easy access. At launch, it will come with a set of 20 NES games, which strangely enough, will all feature some kind of online connectivity. 3 and Donkey Kong.

Finally, you will also be able to talk with friends online but you'll have to use your smartphone in order to do so.

"There are now no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems", a Nintendo spokesperson said. A Family Membership (12 Months for $35) will include access to the Nintendo Switch Online service for up to eight Nintendo Account holders. Allowing so much flexibility with classic NES games makes the Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online feature worth the small price of admission.

While Switch Online will rid of the ability to play online multiplayer games for free, Nintendo is assuring users that not all online features will require a subscription from September.

The plan pricing for Nintendo Switch online only covers one user account on a Switch.

As previously mentioned, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will be able to play classic NES games for free as part of their membership.

Even if online subcribers don't get every game they want through the service, there are already a handful of classic games in the Nintendo Switch eshop. The collection will include 20 games to start with more games added on a regular basis. This acts as a sort of Netflix for games and will slowly cycle through Nintendo's catalogue of classic games. It's also a must for the long term health of your saves, as if your Switch were to ever die, you could lose all of your existing saves as it stands.

And although its full launch was delayed several times, Nintendo Switch Online will be with us soon enough.
