Mr Babchenko, one of Russia's best-known war reporters, spoke and wrote a year ago about leaving the country because of repeated threats that he and his family would be harmed.

Babchenko had been scathingly critical of the Kremlin in recent years.

He worked as a military correspondent for several Russian media outlets.

Writing in an article in the United Kingdom newspaper, the Guardian, explaining his decision to flee Russia, Babchenko said the campaign "was so personal, so scary, that I was forced to flee".

Babchenko thanked the Ukrainian security service for saving his life.

The State Security Service, or SBU, said Russian Federation had sought to pay $40,000 to assassinate Arkady Babchenko, who moved to Kiev past year following threats in his homeland. Authorities said they suspected he was killed because of his work.

"It was him who did for Novaya Gazeta the best reportages from the war in South Ossetia", the newspaper wrote in an editorial, calling him a "true artist".

During an interview with Israeli journalist Lisa Rozowski in 2017, Babchenko provided a humorous reason for his fierce determination to oppose the current Russian administration.

"Some called for me to be stripped of citizenship, others are making an online game where you can beat me to death", he said.

Babchenko's murder quickly attracted worldwide attention.

Ukrainian law enforcement confirmed his death in a Facebook post, written in Ukrainian.

Babchenko was accused of lacking patriotism, something he called ironic considering he fought for his country in the first separatist war in Chechnya in the 1990s. He was working for the Crimean Tatar television station, ATR, that was driven out of Crimea after Russia's seizure of the peninsula.
