Amazon Scores U.K. Premier League Soccer Rights Deal

Amazon Scores U.K. Premier League Soccer Rights Deal

There will be 20 Premier League games shown on Amazon Prime Video over three years, starting in 2019 after they bought one of the two remaining domestic packages available for the time frame.

"We are extremely pleased that Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon have invested in these rights and all view the Premier League and our clubs as vital parts of their live sports offerings", Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore said.

The U.S. company secured one of two previously unsold three-year packages for United Kingdom rights, the Premier League said on Thursday, with BT picking up the other to increase its access to live action. The first midweek round in December will be streamed on Prime Video, followed by streaming of the Boxing Day round later that month. In February, Sky Sports paid £3.58 billion for four packages, while BT Sport spent £295 million on another package. Sky holds the rights to broadcast 128 matches, while BT has 52.

That plan fell through when the White House tried to insist that he agree to including a so-called "sunset clause" in the deal. Apple industry officials and the state's congressional delegation hoped the Trump administration would reconsider.

Pescatore added that the award was "great news for BT, with its TV platform the only place where users can watch all the Premier League matches from 2019, thanks to its content relationships with Amazon and Sky - for Now TV". Premier League football joins a growing collection of live sports being streamed on Prime Video, including NFL games, ATP World Tour Tennis events, and US Open Tennis. The rights packages include a total of 200 of the league's 380 games, up from the current deal of 168.

Adding Premier League rights is sure to boost the appeal of Amazon Prime in the U.K. Amazon will be looking to convert Premier League fans into big spending holiday shoppers during the tech giant's busiest period of the year. "Over these two December fixture rounds Prime members will be able to watch every team, every game, so no matter which Premier League team you support, you're guaranteed to see them play live on Prime Video".

The deal underlines Amazon's ambition to take on traditional pay-TV broadcasters in the multi-billion dollar battle for sports rights.

What does this mean for the future of Premier League broadcasting?

No doubt the organisation are excited about tapping into a network of 100 million Prime members worldwide - over ten times the number of subscribers to Sky, who have been experiencing falling viewership in their sports packages in recent years.

The grants, which the law caps at $125,000 for 2019, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. State officials have already been overwhelmed with the response to the moving incentive program.

Under the new formula, the maximum a club can receive is 1.8 times the amount received by the lowest-earning club, the Premier League said in a statement.
