Babchenko faked his own death in elaborate sting operation

"The Committee to protect journalists calls on Ukrainian authorities to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into the murder of the Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, who was shot dead in Kiev the evening of may 29", - said in the message of the organization in Twitter.

Arkady Babchenko was reported to have been shot in the back when leaving his apartment in Kiev, in the Ukraine, by a Russian hitman and died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.

Babchenko, whose arrival at the presser was greeted with gasps from the assembled reporters, was emotional in his remarks, thanking the SBU and apologizing to his wife, who was apparently unaware of the hoax.

Whether or not the operation did in fact catch Babchenko's would-be assassins, some may be left wondering if the tactic of faking his death could harm the credibility of the Ukrainian government. "I did my job and I'm still alive".

Many of Babchenko's contemporaries expressed relief that he was still alive.

Mr Hrytsak said the operation began after Ukrainian security services were informed about a plot to kill Babchenko.

"I am sorry, but there were no options here", Babchenko said at the presser.

Speaking at the press conference, Babchenko said the operation had been prepared over a two-month period and that he was told about it a month ago.

Although Babchenko was not killed, Ukrainian Security Chief Vasyl Hrytsak said that Moscow had ordered his murder, Radio Free Europe reported.

A Russian journalist who was reportedly gunned down in Ukraine's capital has appeared alive and well at a news conference, revealing that his murder had been staged to foil an alleged Kremlin hit plot. "I've buried my own friends and colleagues many times myself".

The man allegedly paid to organise Mr Babchenko's killing was detained on Wednesday, he said, showing a video of the arrest.

"So Arkady Babchenko, the Russian dissident reporter who was murdered yesterday, is... not dead".
