Yemen troops mass in bid to retake key port

The Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's exiled government launched an assault on Hodeida on Wednesday.

The two sides were also at odds over the recent deployment of UAE forces to the Yemen's Arabian Sea island of Socotra, a dispute mediated by Saudi officials.

The conflict has left almost 10,000 people dead in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country.

"Such hostile acts by the Iran-backed Houthi militias prove the continuing involvement of the Iranian regime in supporting the Houthi militias with qualitative capabilities in a flagrant and explicit violation of the two United Nations resolutions No. 2216 and 2231 with the objective of threatening the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as the regional and global stability".

Local military sources said hundreds of Yemeni fighters as well as tanks and military supplies from the UAE arrived on Monday to reinforce troops, including Emiratis and Sudanese, in al-Durayhmi, a rural area 10 km (6.21 miles) south of Hodeidah.

Early on Wednesday, convoys of vehicles headed towards the rebel-held city as heavy gunfire rang out.

Global aid agencies and the United Nations have warned the assault could shut down the vital aid route for some 70 percent of Yemen's food, as well as the bulk of humanitarian aid and fuel supplies.

This week US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a brief statement about the Trump administration's willingness to address the "security concerns" of the coalition leaders while "preserving the free flow of humanitarian aid and life-saving commercial imports".

Before the war, over 70 percent of Yemen's food and fuel imports came through Hodeida, accounting for over 40 percent of the nation's customs income.

Canadian Grand Prix driver ratings: Vettel dominant, Hamilton struggles, Verstappen shines
Hamilton started fourth but dropped back to finish fifth and is a point behind Vettel a third of the way through the season. Red Bull's Max Verstappen took third after a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to pass Bottas through the first two corners.

Aid groups nevertheless warned of disaster.

The offensive is controversial as Hodeida serves as the key entry point for supplies into a country teetering on the brink of starvation. "We already gave the United Nations the chance to operate from this seaport, and (the Houthis) refused". The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to discuss the offensive.

Emirati-led troops have advanced along the southwestern coast to the outskirts of Hodeidah under a coalition strategy to box in the Houthis in the capital Sanaa and choke off their supply lines to force them to the negotiating table. A Saudi-led coalition entered the conflict in March 2015.

The UN on Monday withdrew all of its global staff from Hodeida ahead of the impending assault, warning that any offensive would put millions of lives at risk.

The attack is expected to lead to a protracted and bloody confrontation, putting "literally hundreds of thousands of people... into a life-threatening situation", Lise Grande, United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, told U.S. radio station NPR. Military sources said the deaths were caused by mines and snipers.
