Donald Trump in Britain: President lands as protests begin

The trumps were at a black-tie dinner hosted by Prime Minister Theresa May at Blenheim Palace on Thursday evening.

President Trump is scheduled to meet British Prime Minister Theresa May, who wants a post-Brexit trade deal, days after President Trump said the United Kingdom was in "turmoil".

The demonstrations were in stark contrast to Trump's assertion to the press that the British "agree with me on immigration" and mirrored those in Brussels ahead of Trump's arrival there on Tuesday to meet with other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders.

He added: "I used to love London as a city -I haven't been there in a long time".

The event will begin with a military parade featuring the bands of the Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards in the spectacular Great Court.

However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the president's policies were putting millions of lives at risk and criticised May for her warm welcome. "We have come to an agreement which absolutely delivers what people voted for", she said in a statement.

The antipathy between Trump and segments of the British public started during the 2016 presidential campaign, when Trump called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.

"It's an easy target, those people who are visibly different", they said. Another 13 percent said they didn't know.

On Friday he will visit PM Theresa May at Chequers, set to be followed by a meeting with Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle. Their first stop was to the ambassador's official residence at Winfield House in London, while being carefully protected from protesters.

"Having a special relationship means that we expect the highest standards from each other", said Mayor Khan, who signed off on the baby balloon.

Some 77 percent of Britons have an unfavourable view of Trump, according to a poll by YouGov with 1,648 respondents.

Khan said a year ago that Trump's trip to the United Kingdom should be cancelled after the president retweeted videos from a leader of an ultranationalist British party that claims to show Muslims engaging in violent acts.

Last month, Labour member of Parliament Gavin Shuker ran down a list of objections to Trump: the separation of migrant families and detention of children; the USA departure from the United Nations' Human Rights Council; the US president's praise for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"There is no stronger alliance than that of our special relationship with the U.S. and there will be no alliance more important in the years ahead", May said ahead of the visit. She added it was "also an opportunity to tear down the bureaucratic barriers that frustrate business leaders on both sides of the Atlantic".

But Brexit champion Nigel Farage predicted there would be a "real clash" on Brexit.

"The Americans can't believe, quite frankly, what a mess we're making of Brexit", he told the BBC.

Along with trade and security links, 10 Downing Street said the other key areas to be discussed between Prime Minister May and President Trump included Brexit and the Middle East.
