Drama as ‘dead’ woman returns to life in mortuary

A woman was declared dead after suffering severe injuries in a vehicle crash - but scared the life out of mortuary workers when they discovered she was still breathing.

The South African woman had been certified dead by paramedics at the scene in the Gauteng province, south-west of Johannesburg on 24 June.

"Paramedics are trained to determine death, not us", a source at the Carletonville mortuary told the Sowetan newspaper.

Over the past decade, South Africa has had several similar instances involving people being misidentified as dead, only to be found alive and well inside a morgue refrigerator, according to the BBC.

The woman's family has been contacted, he said, but due to patient confidentiality neither the victim nor her family will grant interviews.

She's now reportedly recovering in a hospital.

The ambulance company has maintained the woman "showed no form of life" after paramedics checked for a pulse and signs of breathing.

The man said the family was in shock.

Emergency services said the woman was involved in a deadly pile-up near the town of Carletonville, which saw the auto she was riding in roll and throw all three occupants out of the vehicle.

Bradnick said there is no proof of negligence by his company.
