GOP ex-Sen. Jon Kyl will be the 'Sherpa' for SCOTUS nominee

As soon as Kennedy announced his retirement plans on June 27, Democrats mobilized, arguing that anyone Trump selects would be hand-picked to help roll back abortion rights, Affordable Care Act protections, same-sex marriage, and scores of other decisions that have shaped modern America - while ruling in favor of corporations and against under-represented minorities. Of the court's liberal justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 and Stephen Breyer turns 80 next month, so Trump may well get another opportunity to cement conservative dominance of the court for years to come.

If as expected Trump nominates someone firmly to the right, conservatives could dominate the court for years.

More than the other potential nominees, Hardiman has a strong record in favor of gun rights.

"It's an historic decision". But there are red state Senate Democrats who are up for re-election in November like Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Joe Manchin of WV and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota. Dick Durbin of IL on NBC's "Meet the Press" said Sunday.

The opposition team was then persuaded by Jordan to go back to the negotiating table, diplomatic sources said. President Donald Trump will have a detailed discussion about Syria when they meet in July.

The White House has prepared promotional material on all four prospective nominees, and Trump has reportedly spent the weekend discussing his options with top aides and friends, including Fox News host Sean Hannity, over golf at his company's club in New Jersey. Barrett was appointed by Trump to the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals past year.

"He could throw a dart on that list" and conservatives would be happy.

On the flip side, if the Republicans suggest they will approve of the nominee, it's hard to see how the nomination fails - and it gives the Democrats even more cover to buck their party and also support Trump's pick. Trump has been struggling with Kavanaugh's association with the Bush family, however, an issue the Post calls the "Bush factor".

The president is said to have narrowed his choice to four federal appeals court judges: Thomas Hardiman, 53, of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals; Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett, 46; Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Raymond Kethledge, 51; and District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh, 53.

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of CT, who is on the Senate Judiciary Committee that holds hearings on Supreme Court nominees, told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" that Trump has "outsourced" his decision to the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.

Manchester United 'confident' of landing Chelsea's Willian
Willian's departure would surely annoy Chelsea fans, as the Brazilian is one of the most liked performers in the squad. What they are looking for is an explosive player to liberate Messi. 'People speculate a lot.

But it is Kavanaugh who has been the focus of much of the lobbying, both for and against him.

With a slim one-vote majority in the Senate, any GOP defections could prove problematic in winning confirmation for Trump's eventual choice - that is, if Democrats hold together in opposition. Dianne Feinstein of California said something to Barrett like "the dogma" - meaning Catholic teaching and faith - "lives loudly within you." Sen.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told Trump he believes Kethledge and Hardiman might be easier for the Senate to confirm than either Kavanaugh or Barrett, The New York times reported, citing Republican officials briefed on the conversations.

In his dozen years on the court, Kavanaugh has been involved in some 286 opinions.
