Oil jumps after Trump warns Iran of grave 'consequences'

Gheypour, a top commander in Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, warned the US President will regret threatening the Islamic Republic.

Mr Trump was responding to a threat from President Rouhani, who told a gathering of diplomats: "America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars".

Earlier in the day a high-ranking Iranian officer said Trump's warnings were nothing but "psychological warfare".

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended Trump's "tough stand" against Iran.

"Threats of military force are never helpful, and I think that particularly in the tense situation in the Middle East this is not a helpful means of discourse".

Iran faces increased US pressure and looming sanctions after Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from a 2015 worldwide deal over Iran's nuclear program.

In the speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, Mr Pompeo also said the Iranian Government had "heartlessly repressed its own people's human rights, dignity and fundamental freedoms".

Trump's comments came after Pompeo, in a major address to the Iranian diaspora in California, said Washington was not afraid to sanction top-ranking leaders of the "nightmare" Iranian regime.

"Sadly, after pulling us out of the nuclear deal with Europe and Iran, there doesn't seem to be strategy for how to move forward to fight Iran's activities", she said. First and foremost, by forestalling the further strategic alignment of Russian and China, but also by smoothing the way for the USA war-drive against Iran.

But it only deepened questions about the long-term direction of Trump's Iran policy.

The US is regularly suspected of backing the idea of regime change, but analysts say its current stance may simply be an attempt to pivot after a week of dire headlines over Trump's much-maligned summit with Russia's Vladimir Putin and a relative lack of progress on North Korea.

Trump's tweet suggested he has little patience with the trading of hostile messages with Iran, using exceptionally strong language and writing the all-capitalized tweet.

Hang Seng fell to nine-month lows in early trading, but reversed losses as Chinese stocks staged a sharp rebound. Benchmark 10-year US notes last fell 13/32 in price to yield 2.895 percent, from 2.847 percent late on Thursday.

"Pompeo warned Tehran that it would face 'the strongest sanctions in history" if it didn't change course and comply with the USA demands.

"Attention is being focused on geopolitical tensions, particularly between U.S. and Iran", said Gene McGillian, director of market research at Tradition Energy in Stamford, Connecticut.

A few hours before Trump's tweet, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed in a speech that the United States would work with the Iranian people to undermine their clerical leaders, whom he described as "hypocritical holy men", guilty of looting their country to enrich themselves and finance Islamist terrorism around the world.

In 2012, he said the United States could "blow them away to the Stone Age".

The Iranian rial plunged to a record low against the US dollar on the unofficial market on Monday amid fears of military confrontation between Iran and the United States. "The United States is with you".
