Her mother filmed the incident and posted it on Facebook, where it went viral and, for many, instantly turned Ahed into a symbol of resistance to Israel's half-century-old military rule over the Palestinians. With her unruly mop of curly light-colored hair, the Palestinian teen quickly became a local hero and an internationally recognizable figure. They are led away through an opening in the barrier.

Ahed, 17, and her mother Nariman, who was also jailed over the incident, were driven by Israeli authorities from the Sharon prison inside Israel to a checkpoint leading to the West Bank to arrive at their home in the village of Nabi Saleh.

Tamimi's mother, who had been convicted of similar offenses, was also released on Sunday. He did not say what this would entail.

"Ahed Tamimi is a symbol of Palestinian pride and dignity, a reminder of the corruption and crimes of the Israeli occupation, and a chapter of shame to those who never condemn any of Israel's crimes, like the so-called American peace envoys", Erekat wrote on Twitter Sunday.

After being mobbed by friends family and press, Tamimi made her way to Ramallah, where she paid a visit to the grave of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The event took place shortly after she heard Israeli troops had severely wounded her 15-year-old cousin, whom they shot in the head with a rubber bullet during a stone-throwing clash.

Tamimi's scuffle with the two soldiers took place December 15 in Nabi Saleh.

The day before Ahed Tamimi was released, two Italians were arrested for drawing a 4m (13ft) mural of the teenager's face on the wall that separates Bethlehem from Jerusalem.

While she was in prison, Ahed Tamimi's lawyer reportedly filed a complaint accusing the 17-year-old's interrogators of sexual harassment.
