Rep. Meadows Warns He Could Go Around Speaker Ryan to Impeach Rosenstein

Rep. Meadows Warns He Could Go Around Speaker Ryan to Impeach Rosenstein

"I don't think we should be cavalier with this process or with this term", Ryan said.

Jordan, a firebrand from OH in office since 2007, announced on Thursday his intention to be considered as Ryan's successor as Speaker should the Republicans maintain control of the House in the November midterm elections. Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan on Wednesday escalated their fight with the Justice Department, introducing a resolution to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Meadows, who introduced articles of impeachment against Rosenstein on Wednesday night, spoke with Hill.TV shortly after talking with key GOP leaders in a scrum on the House floor during the first series of votes on Thursday morning.

The House leaves for a monthlong recess on Thursday, making any action before the break unlikely.

The House Republicans accuse Rosenstein of withholding documents and of being insufficiently transparent in his leadership of the investigation.

Absent from the group, so far, is Freedom Caucus founding member Rep. Ron DeSantis.

"It's an uptick in their fabulously irresponsible effort to damage the critical institutions of this country in favor of defending the president", Himes, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said.

Ryan has said that he's been able to get DOJ to turn over more documents just by meeting with officials there and talking through both sides' concerns.

Meadows said that he is "trying to make sure that we go the extra mile to give DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation the ability to comply". And we have to get full compliance.

The biggest unmet demand is providing lawmakers access to unredacted documents related to the Clinton investigation, which falls under the House Judiciary subpoena, the officials said.

Asked in May about rumblings that House Republicans might move to impeachment, Rosenstein was defiant.

Napolitano went on to say that the impeachment proceedings against the deputy AG will likely lead to nothing, but that it could be a "red badge of courage" for Rosenstein trying to defend the integrity of the Justice Department.

Actually impeaching Rosenstein faces a high bar.

In addition to Ryan's concern, Gowdy reiterated his opposition to impeachment Thursday, saying he didn't want the "drama", only the documents.

House Conservatives File to Impeach Rod Rosenstein
Republican leaders, however, have said in recent weeks that they are satisfied with the Justice Department's progress. Gowdy said after the meeting that he was pleased with the department's efforts.

The last time the House actually voted to impeach an executive branch official other than a president was 1876.

For his part, Mr. Rosenstein has thumbed his nose at the lawmakers.

Ryan made the comments a day after a group of 11 GOP lawmakers filed articles of impeachment against Rosenstein.

"We have caught the Department of Justice hiding information, redacting information they shouldn't have", added Jordan. Even when the released documents reveal that the investigation is credible and above board, the president's defenders distort and lie about their contents to push the narrative that Mueller is on a "witch hunt".
