Samsung to open world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing centre in India today

Samsung hopes the smartphones it makes in India will be sold locally and in other markets around the world.

The new facility will help Samsung double its current capacity for mobile phones in Noida to an annual 120 million units after the phased expansion plan is complete, the company's statement said.

Korean technology giant Samsung on Monday inaugurated the world's largest mobile phone factory at its Noida facility, providing a fillip to the Narendra Modi government's efforts to promote manufacturing in the country, and also signalling its intent to take on Chinese counterparts, which have been dominating the Indian market.

Samsung has officially opened its newest smartphone factory in India.

The plant is spread over 129,000 square meters, or 35 acres.

The company now makes around 67 million smartphones in India and with the new unit being functional the production is expected to increase to almost 120 million mobile phones.

Modi said 30 percent of the phones manufactured at the factory, built at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, will be exported.

The more than 500 Korean companies operating in India were mostly concentrating in the automobiles, electronics and textiles "but going forward, we will expand cooperation to various areas, including shipbuilding, medical devices and food processing", Moon said.

Samsung has two manufacturing plants - in Noida and in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu - five R&D centres, and one design centre in Noida, employing over 70,000 people and expanding its network to over 1.5 lakh retail outlets.
